Macy's is Evil: Filene's Basement closure
(edited to reduce confusion over Filene's Basment vs Filene's)
It was bad enough that Macy's took over Filene's, causing Boston's historic Downtown Crossing to lose a famous landmark. Filene's has been a fixture since 1890. That was the very first Filene's ever.
But, I consoled myself, the Basement would still be there (though its name, "Filene's Basement" would no longer make sense once Filene's was gone). I've been shopping at the Basement since I was a scrawny, awkward adolescent.
Now, it turns out that the company that bought the Filene's building is going to renovate it, causing the original Filene's Basement store to close for up to two years!
This is an outrage. Macy's is evil
The original store is the only one that still has the automatic markdown system. A trip downtown is not complete without a peek into the Basement. And you just don't find bargains anywhere else like you do at the Downtown Crossing store. Take my full length, off-white, Ralph Lauren cashmere coat with toggle buttons, for example. The original price tag read $2000. But I got it for less than $200. And the coat would not be nearly as special if I'd bought it at some end of the season sale at a regular department store. It is the quintessential Basement bargain.
And what about the annual bridal gown event? People come from other states to attend that sale. Apparently the local merchants at Downtown Crossing are pretty concerned about the loss of tourist traffic to the area.

I don't care that they opened one on on Newbury Street. There is only one true Filene's Basement and that is the downtown store.

I used to have a Macy's Visa, which gave me Macy's gift certificates instead of miles (I don't really fly that often). Of course, now that we're all pissed off at them, I won't be using *that* card anymore!

it is great...i earn miles on northwest by going through their site..and then earn points on my BR card (or on another site..also get miles on american by charging it to my advantage MC)

There's also a custom shoe maker in Brookline that my mom had used when she was visiting. May be more easily accessible for Umber. :)
the second one has ridiculously cheap products..normally i would not skimp on something i put on my face (eek scary thought of what could be in el cheapo cosmetics)..but this company has been written up in most fashion magazines (not that they are the new england journal of medicine or the FDA or anything) as being very reliable, safe, etc... of course, though..in the end.. caveat emptor
I will buy electronics online..but often after I've already checked it out in the store (to see if I like the look/feel/weight/size/actual use/etc)..but you get much better deals online..and there are some pretty reliable online electronics stores with good customer service...
same with make-up/beauty products..might check it out in the store..then buy them online (and save on tax)..that though..sometimes is not worth saving a few bucks..and i might just buy them in person...
efficient while still economical shopping is one of my biggest hobbies :)
though..sometimes i'm on a marathon returning mission... i hit like 4 stores in a row..just walk up to the counter..return..and walk out the door...
i love being efficient like that...
i leave the house with a full trunk...return with an empty car :)
and the added bonus is because i'm always ordering everything x 2 (two sizes for every item)..i always end up qualifying for free shipping :P
yeah..i'm the queen of online shopping
and mirza (my cat) loves that my apartment always has cardboard boxes for him to play in...
but for some things.... like shoes..most online stores require you to send them back..either because they are online only..or because the online store is a separate business entity from the physical store chain...and my feet are so weird that i never know if a shoe will fit.. it doesn't matter what the brand or size is..i always have to try on like a dozen shoes before i find one that i can wear for more than 10 minutes without getting blisters (i wish i were exaggerating about this)..that just doesn't work with online shopping unfortuantely..
The best part is that I get to try stuff on at home and compare it to my wardrobe (do I already have something just like it?...how well does it coordinate with the stuff I own? Will it make me buy several more pieces of clothing just to find a way to wear it?)
Though..sometimes I will get something from Overstock...if I'm sure I'll like it and want to keep it.. (like bedsheets or something)
Yeah..the Newbury (Newberry -- cute) St one is fine..but it not the Downtown Crossing Store..you are right, they don't have the same sort of designer brands.. or the same markdowns...
But I do love shopping and think of it as an experience. So the two aren't mutually exclusive. :)
