British protestors call for end to Israeli Occupation.

On Saturday the streets of London echoed to the chants of 20,000 demonstrators ? Olmert! Olmert! You must learn, the refugees will return?. Secretary of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign Betty Hunter, told the marchers as they assembled in Trafalgar Square that this was the biggest march in London so far against Israeli occupation. The demonstration was built by a wide coalition of forces including anti-Zionist Jews, Christian peace activists, all the main British Muslim organisations as well as the two biggest Trades Unions. The date of the march was chosen to mark the 40 anniversary of Israel?s illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.
The crowds, decked in Palestinian flags and ?kouffiyah? checked scarves that have now become a fashion item amongst London?s cosmopolitan youth, responded warmly to the short speeches by campaigners. A video address by Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Hanniyeh highlighted the painful anniversary, and the inevitability of a Palestinian State with Jerusalem as it capital. Mr.

Veteran campaigner George Galloway, presently representing the left-wing Anti-War coalition Respect in the Westminster parliament, called for the release of Marwan Baghouti and the thousands of other Palestinian political prisoners. Galloway called for a boycott of the ?apartheid state? of Israel, and the building of links between Mosques, Churches and other centres in Britain with their equivalents in Palestine. Another MP, left wing Labour rebel Jeremy Corbyn reminded everyone to lobby their MP?s in November about Britain?s shameful record in Palestine past and present.
