Life of Pi, shall I read on?
I used to be smart when I was younger. I read a lot as I found it stimulated my imagination. Amusement in the form of second-hand experiences, fictional or real, were once a welcomed substitute to first-hand social interactions. Then I graduated from college, and found I had to hit the ground running the rat race. Now I'm brown, in IT, and belong to that little place called 'abroad', so no ones really interested in hiring me for anything other than my professional skills. Since then, needless to say, I have picked up very few books that wouldn't belong within my own domain of professional expertise. Having now established a comfortable position within the rat race, I'm happy jogging the rest of the way, book in hand if possible.
So my sister drops "Life of Pi" by my bedside, and how to say, I found suckage, and I no likey :(. I enjoyed the authors note, and was looking forward to a tale that'd finally prove the existence of God. Unfortunately, I find it hard to get passed the sixth page :P. Here's what's written:
"The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity - its envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud."
Huh??? Animate death and life if you want to, no worries. Make our existence into a romantic tragedy, I like. Where did this cloud come from :( ???
Am I being trivial here, or is there definite suckage here? :P
Shall I read on?? Am I just thinking from the wrong side of my brain? If not, does it get better?
If so, please don't spoil story by discussing.
Such a let down ... maybe I shall just move on to Kite Runner?? I need something that'll grab me and reignite that spark I once had ...

...it really hooks you in later on, but the beginning is a bit of a bore, I agree.
...I wanted to give up too, but desperate for a read I continued on and it is a great book...
... its really on the cycle of life and death and death and life without being 'preachy'.... round and round it goes and where it stops, no one knows...

You're just like my bro. He's in IT too. I think the last book he read was on C++ or some other hellish compu-speak.
here, i see death in love with life. Then life jumps over death, and some change falls out of its pocket :P. Then there's a cloud passing over. :( I get the meanings, I know what he's saying - I'm just not amused here (A). I shall continue on ..

(Ok, i read it years ago, but still, it rocked.)
the cloud is just part of the imagery... that gloom isn't a cloud that stays over your head forever, but it's only affect is the shadow it casts (which lacks even more substantive import) and that "passes" very quickly over you in life. So... death sucks, gloom exists, but it isn't the bulk of life.... it is a fleeting, not all- encompassing thing.
