Liars

O believers why say that which you do not. (Quran 61:2)

?O you who have believed! Fear Allaah and be with those who are true .?
(At-Tawbah: 119).

?In their hearts is disease, so Allaah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they used to lie.?
(Al-Baqarah: 10)

?? And Allaah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.?
(Al-Munaafiqoon: 1)

Narrated by Ibn Masud: Allahs messenger (saaw) said ?Adhere to the truth, for truth leads to good deeds and good deeds leads to paradise, and if a man continues to speak the turth and makes truth his object he will be recorded as a truthful person before Allah. Avoid (you people) falsehood, for falsehood leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to hell, and if man continues to speak falsehood and make falsehood his object he will be recorded as a liar before Allah (Agreed upon)

A person may tell lies for fun to entertain his companions, and thus become accustomed to telling lies and feel no grievousness in this. It was related in a Hadeeth: ?Woe to one who tells lies to entertain people! Woe to him! Woe to him!?

Abdullaah bin ?Aamir reported that his mother once called him, promising to give him something, and the Prophet (r) heard this, so he said to her: ?What will you give him?? She answered: ?I will give him some dates.? So he (r) said to her:
?If you were not to give him (what you promised), it would be recorded as a lie against you.? (Abu Dawood & Al-Bayhaqi)

First of all, we would like to stress that telling lies is a bad conduct. It is not proper for righteous people and true believers; rather, it is an aspect of hypocrisy, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hypocrite has three characteristics: he tells lies, breaks his promise and breaches trust." (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Al-Bukhaari reported that Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ?Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, and ignorance, Allah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.?
