Origins
The Zouk Music style was invented in Paris, in the early 1980s when many different styles were fused.
This styles includes: compas, balakadri (kadri dance & ball), bal granmoun dances (adult ball & dances) and different folklores :mazurka (from Martinique) and biguine (Guadeloupe/Martinique), french melodies, American pop (particularly funk), gwo ka (Guadeloupe) and other indigenous styles (from the Karibs' tribe).
The leading band to emerge from this period was the band formed of Guadeloupe and Martinique natives. They gave the style a pan-Caribbean sound by taking elements from compas, guadeloupean and martinican folklores, funk, salsa and became the most famous band of Zouk in the world.
Kassav' is the name of a local tapas. It was formed in 1979 by Pierre-Edouard D?cimus, a long-time professional Musician who worked in Paris with Freddy Marshall. Both were born in Guadeloupe.

They continued to grow more popular in France then abroad. Both as a group and with several members' solo careers: Patrick St Eloi, Georges Decimus, Jean Claude Naimro, Jacob Desvarieux and Jocelyne Beroard.
With a number of hits Zouk, Kassav rapidly became the most widespread dance and music to hit Latin America in the late 90s and early 2000s. It is wildly popular as far afield as Europe (France & its overseas territories and Belgium & Swizerland), Africa (Cape Verde), Asia (Japan) and Brazil.
Zouk is well known for wildly theatrical concerts featuring special effects spectacles and colourful traditional costumes.
