Lebanon Presidential Vote on Bush-Sarkozi Agenda

The word is that the November 12 presidential vote session could be delayed to a yet undetermined date, indicating complications to reach a consensus candidate to head the state of Lebanon. The Lebanese file has reportedly moved to the top of the Bush-Sarkozi agenda set for their Tuesday meeting in Washington.
French ministerial sources told Lebanese Al-Akhbar daily that the French President has never been more convinced that Lebanon, Palestine, Iran and Iraq are four inseparable file, adding that Sarkozi will seek to push Bush's administration to take this connection into consideration.

In the meantime, Sarkozi's Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner could visit Lebanon next week; a visit that could coincide with a visit to Beirut by the head of the Arab League, Amr Moussa. The A.L. chief had dispatched his assistant Hisham Yussef to Beirut on a mission said to "save the presidential election, as the countdown has begun."

Kouchner had earlier said that he tackled in his recent encounter with his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem in Istanbul, the constitutional void in Lebanon. "A political void will be filled in an ugly way, that is, two governments and two presidents. This will not benefit anyone; in fact it will heighten challenges, confrontations and tension. This is not in Syria's interest," Kouchner told Lebanese daily Assafir. Analysts say that Franco-Syrian contacts expected to improve in light of a Syrian desire to consolidate ties with Europe though Paris. They believe that the French and the Europeans in general are worried about the situation in Lebanon on the one hand and the future of the UNIFIL force in south Lebanon on the other hand, and that they realize that the Syrians can help accomplish a harmonic presidential vote.
