Junebug and The King
One really has to lump these movies together. They complement one another. While I watched The King before Junebug, I?d be interested on views of those who watched these two the other way round. While the contemplation on order the movies are watched is laughable, the nature of these two movies ? southern, Jesus-loving conservative nature - provoke one to entertain such notions. Junebug is more easily digestible with its neat clean demarcation of symbolisms ? Yankee capitalist vs. Southern Man, modern reality vs. wishful historical fantasies, go-getter gusto vs. rural lethargy, sexual liberation vs. confusion? While at times one hopes for the undercurrents of love to bring about a compromise, it is when the divisions eventually separate in the short-lived drama that one truly feels relieved. An acknowledgement of each others lives is the best it offers as a conclusion, but there is no compromise.
?The King? on the other hand was an outright attack on these values. A viciously calculated revenge ridden obsession. But one that provides a fair degree of euphoric catharsis. It is a Greek tragedy.
