Illusion

It?s a wonderful illusion that we create for ourselves in which we regard ourselves as being part of a group, weather it be a family, a group of friends, a religion, or even that perfect waking dream of sharing every part of ourselves with a loved one. We humans need to think and feel that we are part of some kind of social structure, this sense of belonging, of being recognized, loved or simply being a ?member? gives us some kind of purpose in our daily lives. That party we are invited to, those friends we haven?t seen in for so long, the girlfriend/boyfriend or wife/husband who sleeps in your arms at night. People. Those other recognizable entities which we have seen and known since we opened our eyes for the very first time, those animate forms that inhabit every corner of this planet, and who have that simple capacity to listen and respond to what comes out of your mouth. This simple interaction is what has enabled us to build our civilization into the modern world it is today. Our ability to interact with people at different levels also defines our role in any social structure, weather this is as leaders or passive followers and conformists of a group. However the underling truth to all this social reliance is that we are all still very much alone. This inherent isolation, however much we surround ourselves with loved ones or pretend does not exist, is unfortunately an underlying fact of our existence. We are all isolated and alone when it comes to our ability to introspect our inner most thoughts and desires. It is the darkness that lurks in the corners of our minds, and which bits at our consciousness when we are alone in the dark. This part of ourselves is never transcribed or translated into words or utterances as the delay is simply too great, the information far too overwhelming to be conveyed in such a manner. It sits and accumulates in our minds and somehow we are able to push it aside in order to deal with the physical realities of living and this perfect social illusion which we all strive to maintain.

Asad, my apologies for delay in response; very busy week...

In response to your comment:

A friend of mine enlightened me about this fact while I was having a discussion with her about finding the right person to share one's life with someone. I did not want to believe in it at first but if you think about it, then you come to the conclusion that the "illusion" is undoubtedly true.

I think most of us in the 21st century live in a bubble with illusions beyond our comprehension. It is important to distinguish when that illusion is helpful and when it's something that can drive us out of reality a little too far. It can be dangerous, however, it can also be something we need to keep us going.

I agree that it is the choice that distinguishes the sheep/shepherd, however, sometimes we can't help being either. However I would not promote living ones life with this notion always in mind. The illusion is something we all need, and at least at the surface of things we are able to live a shared existence. You hear of couples after years being together, able to read and anticipate each other by having observed and learned the subtleties of an individual over time. There is also that shared experience that twins seem to have. However your inner most thoughts and feelings still remain your own. Perhaps one day in the future (if we are still around) if we are able to unlock the other 60 or so percent of our brains abilities, then we may evolve telepathic abilities that enable us to share more of ourselves with another individual on a far deeper level. The question that then arises is do we want that?

Ultimately, we are all alone on this journey of life despite how much support we receive from friends and family members. We were born alone and we are going to our graves alone too. That's why I think Islam is such a beautiful religion because it provides us with the framework to appreciate all we have yet remember that we're here for only temporary. We can't completely rely on anybody 100% more than we can on our own Creator who is our protector and friend even in the most distressful times. That's how I think at least. No matter how alone I am, I know that my Lord is my friend and I'm here to please Him. So, it might be empty, but it's kind of fulfilling in some ways too.
