Honey - Nature's Sweet Remedy
The Qur'an mentions the healing properties of HONEY: "(And thy Lord inspired the bee, saying: Choose thou habitations in the hills and in the trees and in that which they thatch; Then eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of thy Lord, made smooth (for thee). There cometh forth from their bellies a drink divers of hues, wherein is healing for mankind. Lo! herein is indeed a portent for people who reflect. (An-Nahl 16:68-69)".
HONEY has been prized for its health benefits - particularly as an antibiotic - for thousands of years.
An Ancient Alternative
~ The ancient Egyptians used it in their embalming mixture.
~ The Romans offered it as a gift to the gods.
~ The Vikings fermented it with yeast and water to make mead.
Most significantly of all, Pooh Bear loved the stuff. I am of course talking about Honey, that thick, delicious, viscous fluid produced by Honey Bees from the nectar of flowers.
That Honey was widely used by early civilisations and is the favoured snack of a fictional yellow bear only goes some way to explaining the appeal of the gloopy, sticky stuff. Those canny Romans, as well as their Greek and Egyptian counterparts, also recognised Honey's numerous healing properties, and for thousands of years since it has been used not just as a natural sweetener, but as a medicine and beauty product.
Despite its long history of treating various ailments, Honey has gone largely unnoticed by the eyes of modern medicine. But all that could be about to change as German Doctors investigating the medicinal qualities of Honey have found that it could be more efficient at treating wounds than antibiotics.
In light of the worrying rise of drug-resistant superbugs such as MRSA a Team of Researchers have created a type of Honey called Medihoney, which they tested against coventional drugs. Kai Sofka, a member of the team from Bonn University, said the results were "astonishing."
"Dead tissue is rejected faster and wounds heal more rapidly. Even wounds which refused to heal for years can be controlled within weeks." The Scientists say the reason Medihoney is so effective is down to an antiseptic called hydrogen peroxide.

But this isn't the only health benefit of Honey. It can, in fact, be used to treat numerous Injuries and Ailments and as a beauty product.
For a start, Honey is a much healthier, Natural Alternative to sugar. So instead of using sugar in tea, yoghurt or baking, add antioxidant rich Honey. If you do choose to use Honey as a sugar substitute, use less as it's much sweeter than regular sugar.
If you've embarked on a detox programme, no doubt Honey, with its cleansing properties, will feature regularly. Taking Honey with hot water and a slice of lemon is a great way to kick-start your day;
an energy boost that is much better for you than caffeine.
Honey also comes in useful in winter, a season of colds, coughs and sore throats. A spoonful of Honey soothes sore throats, and again taken with a slice of lemon and hot water will fight the symptoms of flu. Honey is also a mild antiseptic, and can therefore be used to keep cuts and burns clean and prevent the wound from becoming infected.
Cleopatra - who, if the reaction of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony is anything to go by, knew a thing or two about beauty - used to bath in Honey and Milk to keep her skin smooth. Honey is still used for this purpose to these days. This is because Honey is a Humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture (which is why it is so useful in baking). It is therefore - when warmed with some water - a cheap alternative.
