Hezbollah: Rejecting Berri's initiative not justified

Mohamad Shmaysani

Marwan Hamadeh: We are holding consultations.

Hezbollah political official in south Lebanon Sheikh Hasan Izzeddine said that the February 14 bloc no longer has any pretext to reject House Speaker Nabih Berri's initiative on behalf of the national opposition.

"We all have to walk this obligatory road which has become the only option available," Sheikh Izzeddine said. He warned that the opposition has many options to take should the ruling bloc turns down Berri's initiative and explained that the opposition did not put this initiative forward from a weak position, but rather from a position of adherence to the country's interest.

On Friday, Berri said the opposition was willing to drop a demand for a national unity government if Lebanon's warring groups agree on a candidate for the presidency. "Let us have a consensus presidential candidate and the opposition will drop its demand that a government in which it has larger representation be formed before the elections are held," Berri told supporters at a rally in the eastern town of Baalbek on Friday.

The February 14 political bloc was studying Berri's new initiative aimed at resolving the months-long political crisis. "We are holding consultations, and this will take two to three days. We have to examine and evaluate the issue in all its aspects," Telecommunications Minister in the unconstitutional government Marwan Hamadeh said.
