~ Beethovas Obas - PORTRAIT
The son of Haitian painter Charles Obas, Beethova was born in 1964 in the capital Port-au-Prince under the dictatorship of Fran?ois Duvalier. After taking part in a demonstration against the regime, his father disappeared when Beethova was just five years of age. The young Obas grew up surrounded by his father?s paintings and the many instruments that he had collected.
He taught himself how to play, first the accordion and later the guitar. His talents as a composer were first to be appreciated by local artists. Influenced by jazz, Brazilian music and the local compas rhythms, he was also closely involved in the ?rasin? (roots) protest movement led by Manno Charlemagne. Following a dramatic incident in 1987 in which Charlemagne was seriously injured by gunfire, Beethova Obas found himself stepping in for the older man in a Christmas performance. His gifts as a singer were thereby uncovered.
In 1998 he was elected Best Young Singer by the RFI D?couvertes prize jury, chaired by Manu Dibango.

The worst earthquake to shake Haiti region in 200 years.
At 16:47, Tuesday 15 January, a devastating earthquake registering 7.0 brought much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, to the ground and caused extensive damage in other areas where Haitian Artisans works. The U.S. Geological Survey is saying that this is the worst earthquake to shake this region in 200 years.
As the poorest nation in the world, Haiti doesn't have the means to bring in heavy machinery in order to dig through the rubble to save those trapped. They are working their efforts all by hand. With this on-going, it is feared by some that the death toll in the island country could near 500,000.
Planes carrying teams from China, France, Spain, Venezuela, Qatar, the UK, the US... landed on the island with tonnes of water, food, medicine and other supplies.

HISTORY OF HAITI
Haiti was born in 1804, after the world's first successful slave rebellion. French troops surrendered to forces led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines. But the country's leaders drove it into a paralyzing disorder from which it has yet to recover.
Political turmoil prompted U.S. Marines to occupy Haiti from 1915 to 1934. In 1937, some 18,000 Haitians were massacred along the Dominican border on the orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
In 1957, Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier rose to power, launching a 29-year dynasty of terror. Tens of thousands were killed under Duvalier and his son, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier.
It wasn't until 1990 that Haiti had its first democratically elected president: Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a slum priest who inspired the overwhelmingly poor majority. But Aristide was overthrown in 1991, and Haitians took to the seas by the thousands in a desperate exodus to Florida.
Bill Clinton sent 20,000 U.S. troops to Haiti in 1994 to restore Aristide, who was re-elected in 2000. Aristide's initial promise soon flickered: Accusations that his party rigged legislative elections, pocketed millions of dollars in foreign aid and sent gangsters to attack opponents produced a bloody rebellion that ousted him in 2004.
In 2007, President Rene Preval implored the world to commit to long-term solutions for his nation, saying a "paradigm of charity" would not end cycles of poverty and disaster.

The United States and the United Nations (UN), in cooperation with the Government of Haiti, and with the support of Brazil, Canada, the European Union, France, and Spain co-hosted a ministerial the ?International Donors? Conference Towards a New Future for Haiti? at the United Nations in New York on March 31, 2010. All 192 UN member states were invited to attend the conference.
The goal of the conference was to mobilize international support for the development needs of Haiti in an effort to lay the foundation for Haiti?s long-term recovery. At the conference, Haiti presented t its vision for the country?s future and how international support can assist. Countries, international organizations, and other partners had an opportunity to pledge resources, to coordinate in support of Haiti?s long-term recovery and to commit to a sustained effort to support Haiti.
