Gordon Brown Picks First Muslim Minister
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has named Muslim Labour MP Shahid Malik as a minister at the Department for International Aid and Development, joining a diverse cabinet of young secretaries and ministers of different backgrounds.
Malik is the first Muslim Minister in British history.
Malik, a 39-year-old MP for Dewsbury, was the first Muslim to be elected to the House of Commons for the Labour party in 2005.
He is an "integration activist," encouraging Muslims to juggle between their Muslim identity and British values.
