E-mail could be extinct within a decade as younger peeps switch to texting, instant messaging and websites like Twitter and FB.
E-mail is dying out because it is slow, inconvenient and unfashionable some experts say.

Exam markers have expressed concerns over the use of text messaging language in exam answers. The proof of its increased usage came when a 13-year-old Scottish schoolgirl handed in an essay written completely in text message shorthand, much to the bemusement of her teacher.
One extract said: "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 : - kids FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc."

I read in the newspaper that texting will take email over in the next decades. I'll post IA the article in which they mention this.
I personally think that children took shorthand to another dimension!!!
I don't know how to text in shorthand and not trying to learn it either. When texting in shorthand one has to bear in mind that the recipient might not understand the message. These days it is not the case. People happily text in shorthand !
I hope email and the age old mail system do not crash with the coming of texting, instant messaging and facebook. while I have nothing against it, I feel the use of shorthand is destroying children's ability to spell. I, for the life of me, find it very hard to text in shorthand. I feel stupid! so, hopefully, it is just a phase and will one day phase out!
