funny story
Salamz! This is funny true story about a fam med resident that has been whispered down the grapevine for the last year at my med school.
I ran into a group of my classmates sitting around in the oncall rooms discussing rotations one afternoon. One of the students bursts out and says, "you will not believe what Dr. Heart (not his real name but is very close) did." Hearing the name, I piped up since I had seen Dr. Heart in action one morning march up and literally push a med student away from a computer to type in orders. Lets just say, his reputation for rudeness and skudding the med students out preceded him. So the story goes: One night Dr. Heart had been on call covering family med service, and he was paged in the middle of the night by a nurse who said that a patient on the floor now suddenly had low blood pressure and a low heart rate.. What should she do? Dr. Heart's reply was( i kid u not...) "give him two cans of pepsi...the fluid and caffiene should bring his blood pressure and heart rate back up." The nurse was astounded but she nervously followed the orders. two hours later, suprise suprise patients BP and HR was still in the pits. Now the nurse is freaking out and decides not to take chances with Dr. Heart again so she directly pages the senior to come down and have alook at the patient.
Hearing the story, i remember thinking to myself at the time to avoid Dr heartz when on Family med at all costs. But alas Murphy's law just doesn't work that way. He turned out to be the senior resident on my ward team. Apparently, it was his first time of having a senior's responsibilty and he looked very nervous. I felt bad and decided to ignore past rumors about him. So a couple of days into ward month as i was being skudded out (rumors were soo true) on our whole list of patients, a pharmacy student on our team walks up to Dr Hearts afterrounds and drawls in thick southern accent, "Dr. peloto (the clinical pharmacist) wants you to order vit K for Mr. Smith." Dr. Hearts says "what..who smith? Cant go against Dr. Peloto..yeah ok i'll do it now" and sits down at the computer to chip it in. At the same time, the intern who was covering Mr. Smith says" why does he need Vit K? there's nothing wrong with his PT/PTT.. he's a chest pain rule out" Now pharmacy student looks uncertain and says, "i dont know thats what he told me" After much confusion and scrambling of papers, intern asks,"r u sure he didnt mean potassium?" Pharmacy student brightens and says"yeah thats it! he said replace K."
(Talk about Chinese whispers!)
