Friday, July 27 - Rajaa Alsanea

7:30 p.m.
Girls of Riyadh

In her debut novel, Rajaa Alsanea reveals the social, romantic, and sexual adventures and tribulations of four young women from the elite classes of Saudi Arabia. A groundbreaking, revelatory novel, Girls of Riyadh sparked a firestorm of controversy throughout the Arab world when it was initially published in Lebanon in 2005. Told through a series of anonymous e-mails to subscribers of an online chat group, the story sheds light on the private lives of young women who stuggle to reconcile western values with the customs of a culture firmly rooted in ancient traditions. Raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Alsanea is now a resident of Chicago.

That will cause some shocks. Much like Lipstick Jihad (from Iran) was when it was published.
