Franjieh Accuses LF Official of Gemayel Killing

Former MP Suleiman Franjieh has accused an official of Samir Geagea's Lebanese Forces of being behind the November killing of Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel.

In an interview with NBN television Sunday evening, Franjieh said he had received information that former LF deputy security chief Tony Obeid "has a hand in Gemayel's assassination."

Franjieh, who is also leader of the Marada movement, said that he asked for verification of the data since Obeid is an Australian resident "but may have traveled between Australia and Lebanon."

He also accused the ruling team of "unwilling to reveal the truth about Gemayel's killers."

"Had they want to, they would have found out who killed him (Gemayel) because he was assassinated in broad daylight," Franjieh said.

Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea was also condemned to death for that same crime and then had the penalty commuted to life in prison. Moreover, Tony Obeid's name surfaced during previous confessions by LF members who were very well informed of the circumstances surrounding the assassination of the former head of the "Liberals" party "Dani Shamoun. They said that Obeid had trained the perpetrators by order of the former security chief in the Lebanese Forces "Ghassan Touma", who according to confessions, executed Geagea's orders to assassinate "Shamoun".

The Lebanese judiciary asked for a copy of Franjieh's statement at a time the Lebanese Forces challenged the former minister to inform the judiciary of the information he possesses. LF member of parliament Antoine Zahra said that the Lebanese Forces will ask the judiciary to take action against Franjieh for what he called "delusion".

***Who is "Tony Obeid"?***

Suleiman Franjieh, head of El-Marada Movement, said he had received information that former LF deputy security chief "Tony Obeid" has a hand in Gemayel's assassination. But who is Tony Obeid?

He is the head of the "Intervention and Protection" unit in the former security body of the Lebanese Forces. However Obeid's real name is Antonios Elias Elias, also known as Antonios Elias Obeid. He used to be one of the many notorious security chiefs in the LF militia during the "Elimination war" that took place in the late eighties between the Lebanese Forces and the Lebanese Army under General Michel Aoun's command. He was also involved in several crimes during Lebanon's civil war. Obeid had moved to Australia since the dissolution of the Lebanese Forces in 1994 and was indicted on the 20th of May 1996 and condemned in absentia for life in prison after proven guilty of involvement in the assassination of the LF chief of staff "Elias el-Zaik" on the 19th og January 1990.
