The governments concern is not really the environment, but the tax in it. They will be happy for the additional revenue, who wouldn't.
And on a moral ground, government interest in surveillance is an infringement on privacy. The mere fact that such info can be use, misuse and abused is disheartening. Don't forget that profiling is a tool being sinisterly employed against Muslims. After the cars and calls monitoring, what next?
