Food for the Brain on TV!

"If you do not take care of your body; where are you going to live?"

-Author Unknown

"If there's one person who's done more than anyone to transform the perception of food in Britain, it's the visionary nutritionist Patrick Holford."

The Independent, 23 Jan '05

Patrick Holford is also the Chief Executive Officer of a fairly newly set up organisation called Food For The Brain www.foodforthebrain.org

Food for the Brain's vision:

To create a future where the awareness of the importance of optimum nutrition for mental health is understood by all, and implemented by many:

? babies are optimally nourished for brain development during pregnancy and infancy
? nurseries and schools, from infancy to university, actively encourage optimum nutrition for brain function
? government actively encourage optimum nutrition to promote learning and prevent behavioural and mental health problems from childhood to old age
? the treatment of mental health problems involves correcting nutritional imbalances as a first line procedure
? the public has easy access to information about optimum nutrition for mental health.

A recent email from them:

"Tune in to FOOD FOR THE BRAIN: TONIGHT on ITV this FRIDAY

This week and next you can find out about the first two 'Food for the Brain' schools and the progress they've made through changing nutrition.

On Friday 5th January, on ITV's Tonight with Trevor Macdonald from 8.00-8.30pm, you can find out about the Primary School in Basingstoke that needs a big improvement in both SAT scores and eating habits. This is the first in a series of programmes that will chart the progress of Chineham Park School over nine months leading up to the tests in May. How much difference can we make in changing the eating habits of the children, their parents and the school, and what difference will that have on their performance? That is the question.

The final programme on the Food for the Brain Schools Campaign at Cricket Green School for children with special educational needs is provisionally booked for Tuesday January 9th on GMTV on the Lorraine Kelly Show (from 8.30am onwards). We've been working with Cricket Green School for nine months funded by your generous donations. If you have made a donation thank you so much! As you'll see in the programme there have been some real transformations in children who are struggling at school and in life. These results would not have been possible without your support.

These results are not just anecdotal. Each child was assessed by independent educational psychologist Melanie Herff who says ".the results are extremely encouraging. Every measure of cognition and behaviour, made both by the parents and teachers, has improved. Most significant was the reduction in symptoms of ADHD, hyperactivity and impulsivity. According to the parents' ratings, children have also become less anxious and shy and complain less of minor aches and pains."

WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH CHINEHAM PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL

We are now three months into the project with Chineham Park Primary School. It's a real challenge. We are teaching some of the mums basic cooking skills from scratch. It's no small feat. Apart from improving the food and giving all children a multivitamin and essential fat supplements, we also involve all parents, children and teachers in a series of workshops over this nine month project, at the end of which the children will take their SATs (School Aptitude Tests) and we'll be able to see the results in concrete terms that will mean something to Government and Local Education Authorities.

There is, however, one thing we need to be successful: some more money. We've kept all the costs to an absolute minimum with generous donations of time, food and supplements, but we need to raise about ?8,000 more before May. That's means a minimum of 400 people giving ?20 or more. Please be generous because if every other person decides someone else will chip in we won't have the money to run this project. If you genuinely can't afford it pass this email on to someone who can - perhaps your friends with children or their grandparents.

To make a donation all you do is go to foodforthebrain.org, click on 'become a Friend of Food for the Brain' and select the amount you'd like to donate. If you are already 'a friend' just do the same thing again.)

Sincere thanks for any help you can give. Every little bit makes a difference.

Patrick Holford
Chief Executive Officer"
