First Muslim elected to US Congress

news.yahoo.com

Keith Ellison, a Democrat, became the first Muslim to be elected to the US Congress when he won a seat for the House of Representatives for Minnesota, US media said.

Ellison, 43, overcame sharp personal attacks to defeat a Republican rival and a third-party candidate by running on a populist platform.

On the campaign trail Ellison, an attorney and two-term state legislator, downplayed his religion and blamed the media for keeping it in the news.

Ellison, a black Muslim, has called for an immediate pullout of US troops from Iraq, greater reliance on renewable fuels, and for a universal, government-paid health care system.

Republican rival Alan Fine ran campaign ads emphasizing Ellison's past association with Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam group, seeking to use it as a sign of anti-Semitism.

Okay, can we say "al-Hamdulillah"? :-D
