Favorite Scifi on the Big Screen
Hey all you SciFi junkies, I'm not sure this village is still active or not - here's hoping it is. Haven't seen a lot of interaction here so I thought we could maybe get a discussion going on what are your favorite scifi films or the ones that you think were most influential for the genre. My personal favorites have to be Star Trek II (in no small part due to the fact that the lead villain shared my last name), Contact (a great piece of hard scifi) and Aliens(often imitated). Would love to hear what you guys like and why - just please don't recommend Howard the Duck. Everyone associated with that film and anyone who saw it should be down in Guantanamo wearing orange jump suits.

I was into HP but then suddenly stopped and never even read the last. I need to get back into it though to read the last one come July though.
Sting simply sucked in the original Dune movie...book was better and yes, the overtones were Arabic vs Non-Arabic forces in Dune
I know... Beetlejuice right?!...maybe its a childhood thing...I enjoy anything the Director Tim Burton has done...Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Big Fish...

V for Vendetta...very interestingly it was written way before the sept 2001 events took place...but, in the 1990s Hollywood was not interested in the story because it was to unreal and pessimistic...
For some odd reason I never got into Harry Potter...I should read the books I guess...seen the movies...a bit boring...
Anyone remember 'V' TV series...about the aliens trying to take over earth...it was released in the 80s...
Never saw Wings of Desire or Legend. Or if I did, they obviously didn't leave much of an impression.
The original Dune movie w/Kyle McClachlan (sp?) was ok. Very true to the book, but didn' translate well into a movie, and I think viewers would've been completely lost if they hadn't read the novel beforehand. The more recent version sucked.
As far as the story, I thought the way Herbert integrated Islam into the combined religions was absolutely brilliant. The evolution of Arabic words and Islamic concepts was especially well thought-out and insightful.
What about the recent spate of superhero movies? Most were pretty bad, but the first X-Men at least was reasonable.
Does Harry Potter count as fantasy? :)
Some of the Jap anime is pretty interesting...so dramatic you forget you're watching a cartoon...have you seen Spirited Away?
Legend...hmmm...I guess I would enjoyed it more if Tom Cruise was not in it ! :)

Ely...The music was most haunting--I agree! Did you know a non-animated movie version of The Last Unicorn may be in works!
Donnie Darko is amazing, forgot about that one... and Total Recall was pretty cool too....
I've read several books from Asimov including The Foundation Series-the Trilogy...Did not appreciate the Will Smith movie...
Loved Dune...read some of the books from that series too--AMAZING--always felt the theme existed about good and bad and nothing in life seems as it appears..interestiing how the the desert people existed and feared by the others and how everyone was fighting over the 'spice'--- theme parallels to what is going on in the world today and the clash of cultures with religious Overtones for oil!.........the movie was great too...
I never thought to include the LOTR flics as Sci Fi? Which reminds me, I need to read the Dune series.

I've seen these movies in my childhood, I can easily watch them over and over again...and do watch them from time to time over and over again...heehee

Serenity... um... it may be the one scifi movie I haven't seen. Actually I wanted to see firefly first so that I would know what was going on. Is that a prereq?
Just out of curiosity...since SCI-FI is intertwined with Fantasy...
