It's An Earthquake! What Do I Do?
Be prepared. Here's what to do when the shaking starts while you are:
Indoors:
? Drop, cover, and hold on.
? Move quickly to a nearby safe place that is sturdy, such as a table, desk, or doorway. Don't forget to protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm until the shaking stops.
? If there is no where for you to drop, cover, and hold, take other protective measures. You can sit on the floor against an interior wall (away from windows, skylights, doors, and things that could fall)
Outdoors:
? Move quickly and safely into the open. If possible, make sure that you are away from electrical lines, trees, and buildings.
? Drop to the ground and wait for the shaking to stop.
Driving:
? Carefully and slowly bring your vehicle to a stop at the side of the road away from traffic.
? Do not stop on or under bridges, under power lines or near roadway signs that might fall. Once the shaking has stopped, you can continue driving, but watch carefully for possible damage to the roadway.
The Shaking has Stopped - Now What?
? Check yourself and others for injuries. Prevent yourself from further injuries or damage by changing into long pants, a long-sleeved shirt or sweater, and covered shoes.
? Look for and extinguish any small fires in the vicinity. Eliminate any possible fire hazards by turning off the gas if you can smell a leak.
? Inspect your apartment or house for damages. If it is not safe, get out.
? Listen to the radio for further instructions.
Aftershocks are normal. If they occur, quickly move to a safe place to find cover.
