I posted a similar question to a local sports bike forum here in CA. In summary, it depends if you're more of a commuter or a casual weekend rider.

Italians do have an edge when it comes to cutting edge technology, innovation and styling. Japanese bikes, on the other hand are best value for your money, like you said. It's like comparing a Ferrari with NSX. There's more of a prestige factor associated with Ducatis, MV Agustas and Aprilias. Honestly I don't think Yamahas, Suzukis, Hondas and Kawis lack in any way.

Having said that, if I win a lottery tomorrow, I'll go ahead and buy a Ducati 1098 and an MV Agusta F4 Tamburini :)

Nice bike. I had a 2002 Monster 600. Loved it. You may wanna get after market goodies though (i.e. if you're buying it totally stock)

I wouldn't recommend it as a first bike. For a first bike I recommend picking up a used bike, like a suzuki gs500, or a sv650 (if you like V-twins). It's easier to learn on a smaller bike, and you become a better rider as you move up in engine size. Plus your pretty much guaranteed to drop your first bike. And nothing is more painful then dropping a brand new bike, esp a ducati.

Ride the used bike for a minimum of one year, and then move up. Take the MSF course, and sign up early b/c classes fill up fast.

If this isn't your first bike, then go for it, if it's what you really want. I've ridden a a ducati 750 monster, and it was a fun bike. I'm just not one for touring. I'm more of a go fast, or really fast guy. Which is why I'm moving over to mostly track riding this year.

thanks dude... i was looking at 0 miles at the dealer. it's gonna be my first real bike. I am thinking it may be a bit much for me.

it's a good sport tourer. Has a very nice v-twin sound, esp. with some tergogmni (sp?) pies on there. How many miles? what year? Make sure you check out a ducati forum, to see if there are any specific problems to look out for on that model, other then the expensive and frequent service intervals ducati is known for.
