Iraqis working with Americans in Iraq, either as fixers with media organizations or as employees of the US government or non-governmental organizations, routinely face death threats, abduction, assasination, torture and extortion. These and other at risk populations are increasingly fleeing Iraq for safety.
More than 2.2 million Iraqis have fled persecution and violence in Iraq, mostly to Jordan and Syria. Another 2 million more are displaced within Iraq. The war in Iraq has created the largest refugee crisis in the Middle East since the displacement of the Palestinians in 1948. Yet, the United States has not opened its doors to these refugees. Over the last year the US admitted only 1608 Iraqi refugees.
This panel discussion seeks to explore these issues, offer ways to get involved and help, as well as share some of the inspiring and heartbreaking accounts of ordinary Iraqis.

Deborah Amos, Moderator, foreign correspondent covering Iraq for National Public Radio News.
Nour al-Khal, Iraqi journalist and fixer for Steven Vincent, author of ?In the Red Zone: A Journey into the Soul of Iraq?. She was shot three times and Vincent killed when they were both kidnapped in Basra, Iraq in 2005.
Kirk Johnson, Arabist and writer. He coordinated various reconstruction and humanitarian assistance projects in Iraq in 2005 for USAID and is the founder and director of The List: Project to Resettle Iraqi Allies. thelistproject.org)
Ayub Nuri, Iraqi journalist and former fixer. He currently serves as journalist-in-residence at War News Radio out of Swarthmore College. His articles have been published by the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting.
Lisa Ramaci, founder of the Steven Vincent Foundation in memory of her husband, a freelance journalist kidnapped and killed in Iraq in 2005. It took her 18 months of advocacy to get his fixer, Nour al-Khal to the US. stevenvincentfoundation.org)
Amelia Templeton, Iraqi refugee policy advocate for Human Rights First who has conducted fact-finding missions to Jordan and Lebanon and interviewed scores of Iraqi refugees.
