Don - The Chase Beginnings
OK, I finally saw this movie - YES, I am 10 years behind when it comes to desi films - but I loved the original and unlike some here actually got the chance to see the original in the movie theater when it was first released (yes, I am that old) - it was in the UK, Saturday night show - film was released in Dec 1978 and it was the 10:45 p.m. show at the Liberty Theater on Wembly High Street.
HOWEVER, I have some questions and a similar question was put on the IMDB regarding the film.
SPOILERS HERE so IF you have not seen the film don't read further otherwise it will ruin it for you...
OK, I said there were SPOILERS - stop reading...
IF, Don was NOT Vijay why did he give the disk to DeSilva? Moreover, why was it so important to get it back? I mean why did he give it in the first place.
If he wanted to take over Singhania's business then wouldn't he want those business contacts? Why eliminate all of them - when it comes to business, it's not about loyalty but money and getting the job done.
If he wanted to be "King" did he give the disk to eliminate all the contacts because they were Singhania's and he wanted them all out so he could be King? It was the only answer I could come up with. If that was the case, then why did he feel the need to use a fake disk in the end if he wanted them out of the way...
Something is amiss.
Also, a major flaw is the director failed to give ample time to have trained Vijay. At least in the original Don, Iftekar is showing Vijay movies of Don - his style of walking, moving (and we are presuming he trains him).
We can only assume Vijay was trainned.
I liked the ending and I am rarely thrown of in a movie (and certainly not an Indian one), but Farhan did a FAB job. Pryanka Chopra was actually very good at reprising Zeenat Aman's role and Shah Rukh Khan did a pretty good job.
I personally could not stand Kareena Kapoor in Helen's part, but I guess that's what is in for the Rickshaw vala's in India. She does remind me of Paris Hilton...What I found odd was her dress was so conservative compared to the daring outfit warn by Helen. In the late 70s that outfit she wore was very risque.
So, I'd love to hear you comments. I know some will say Geez, it was a desi movie what did you expect and Stop being so demanding just enjoy
But I am wondering and will try to write about this to Farhan Aktar (still looking for an address - does someone have one or know how to find one).
PLUS I have an idea for a sequel...and I know there is going to be one...

However Mahvish, what do you think of the issue about the disks?
If the director wanted to "fool" the audience he should have done just that, but he didn't - we only assumed he was trained because we thought this was a carbon copy - that's just a dead give away if someone hadn't seen the original.
that was the major difference between the original and new don...in the new one...the don in the 2nd half is actually STILL the DON...thats the whole twist...the audience thinks its vijay trying to be don...but hes not..hes REALLY don...
