Do You Remember?
A whole year has passed, with lots of events and actions.
Time is flying like a traveller who is in a rush to catch a train! A year ago, at this time, I was doing the same thing I am doing now. Reflecting upon the previous year.
***A year ago Gaza was Under Attack. It stood as a platform for Gaza's people to speak up; it also went beyond reporting to analyze the situation, as well as future scenarios. Masha'Allah, it is worthy to mention here that some Naseebers never stopped talking about Gaza (before and after the war). We, Muslims are continuously focusing on the Gaza strip to know what is happening there.
***2 Years ago, in January, my mother passed away. May Allah blesses her soul, forgives her sins. May I meet my mother again or once more. Mother, may your soul rest in peace. Ameen.****
***Muslims 4 Humanity undertook the responsibility of dispelling the negative spirit and giving hope to people that the war would come to end and destruction would stop. Muslims 4 Humanity worked on humanitarian awareness campaigns that encouraged youngsters to take positive action helping their fellow humans in the afflicted Gaza. Poems that depicted the dream of freedom, along with voices singing for the land under siege. Speaking of Palestine, attention was given to Jerusalem on the anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (15 May) people wanted to show their sympathy to the Ailing City.
Many Muslims fixed their eyes on Al-Aqsa Mosque waylaying any damage, yet little are keeping an eye on a city being lost under the darkness of a silent international community.
** Another event that took place was the exposure of the sufferings of the Uyghur people, the Xinjiang Muslims. Who are they? What are their dreams? How hard is the discrimination they face? Why do the Uyghur Muslims voice their sufferings?
**In Iran, in February, there was no way to miss the Iranian Revolution Anniversary. Going back 30 years in time, the history of the revolution and the country current status quo from a global perspective.
*** Elections Time
Of course, when speaking about elections and changes of the world's political scene, one finds Obama's election as US President of paramount importance. After Obama's inauguration, the subjects were about America Under Obama, focusing on general issues like health care, economic recession, racism, American Muslims and American troops sent in Afghanistan.
***The Afghan elections, too, was present. There are so many chronic problems the Afghan people are facing: government corruption, insecurity, unemployment, poverty, lack of practical development schemes and others.
**Just before the summer, British MPs' expenses claim scandal made headlines for consecutive weeks. A report was edited, but these MPs (Members of Parliament) have they changed their behaviour? or Are they still carryng pocketing our tax money (my and your money)?
***I think it is healthy now to move from politics a bit. Is it not healthy to speak about health? However, it is sad that the main health topic in 2009 was not a happy one. It is swine flu. Once, the news about the first cases were aired, the international media got crazy. Ever since, the media machine has never stopped!
**Tragedy in the Entertainment World
On 25 June 2009, the music fans all over the globe were shocked with the sudden death news of Michael Jackson, the Afro-American Pop icon, the King of Pop as he was called. Muslim figures' reacted to Jackson's death.Muslims Singers that include Yusuf Islam and Dawud Wharnsby, amongst the public figures were Nelson Mandela and Imam Zaid Shakir and the well-known Muslim journalist Zahed Amanullah paid tribute to Michael Jackson.
"Michael Jackson will likely be given the benefit of the doubt. People associate his innovations as an entertainer with the best of his intentions ? to bridge gaps between people and make people smile. "May Allah be with you, Michael, always. Love you," said Jermaine Jackson at a press conference announcing Jackson?s passing.
Singing for humanity, for the Planet and for Hope, EARTH song stands as one of Michael Jackson's masterpieces:
'What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
Did you ever stop to notice,
All the children dead from war?
Did you ever stop to notice,
This crying Earth its weeping shores?''
***Toward the end of the year, COPENHAGEN 15 grabbed the world's attention focusing on the climate change ? Hey, that is the humanity's biggest worry! COP 15 was a huge gathering with a special follow-up on the outcome and outlines of the countries (China, India?etc) that did not want to discuss further and simply walked away.
***Viva Palestina Aid Convoy
Arriving in Jordan the convoy was brought to a grounding halt. Viva Palestina Aid Convoy departed from London on 6 December 2009, then passing through Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria, and now in Jordan, awaiting the permission of the Egyptian authorities to let them in Sinai then to Al-Arish and Gaza. It is noted that the convoy encompasses 200 stuffed vehicles and 500 volunteers. The convoy grounded in Jordan will cross
Syria territory and will reach Gaza btwn 03 or 04 January 2010.
***Ultimately, I would mention that in the course of the year 2009 there are numerous events that occurred in Pakistan, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Egypt, Indonesia, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Malaysia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Qatar, Yemen, Zimbabwe...
