Clash in North of Lebanon Kills Two, Wounds Eight
Two persons were killed and eight others were wounded in a clash between two rival factions in the north of Lebanon, police reported. The 30-minute firefight, in which assault rifles were used, pitted the Islamic Unification Movement (IUM) against the Tripoli Brigades Militias, supported by the Future Movement of MP Saad Hariri, in the town's Shiraa square of Abu Samra district in the town of Tripoli.
Lebanese Police patrols and army units intervened and brought the clash to an end. The fatalities were identified as IUM member Nawaf al-Haidar and Tripoli Brigade member Rashed Yassine, who died later in the hospital of his wounds. The casualties included Usama Shabaan, son if IUM founder Sheikh Saeed Shabaan.
