Car Bomb Rocks East Beirut
Lebanese politician Antoine Ghanem killed in Beirut car bomb.
A car bomb has exploded in the area of Sin el-Fil in Beirut, killing at least five people, according to a security source.
"The explosion took place in the Sin el-Fil area near the Metropolitan hotel," a security source said.
Some reports have suggested the blast on Wednesday was an attack on a politician.
Zeina Khodr, Al Jazeera?s correspondent in Lebanon, reported: "We are not sure who was targeted, whether or not it was a politician ? but it comes at a time of heightening political tensions in Lebanon."
"We do know it was a big explosion. We have not seen any explosion in Lebanon since June 14, when a member of parliament was assassinated in Beirut."
The bomb attack comes amid continued differences between the parliamentary majority ahead of presidential elections, which are due to begin on September 25.
