''Brides get completely carried away'

'Soaring' wedding costs put couples off marriage

The soaring cost of weddings as tastes grow more extravagant means 100,000 engaged couples say they will probably never tie the knot, a report says.

Twenty years ago couples spent an average ?4,300 on a wedding, but this has more than quadrupled to ?18,500 ? rising at more than five times the rate of inflation.

The research by ING Direct suggests that couples' extravagant demands is partly to blame, with one in four insisting on indulgences such as string quartets, ice sculptures or horse-drawn carriages once considered the preserve of the rich.

One in 6 grooms blamed their brides, claiming they got 'completely carried away'.
