When I initially created this village, I had truly hoped that I will be able to spend time posting important details that would help the younger generation in our community pursue excellence and academic honor in all fields of their choice. While several personal/work commitments have not really helped me in achieving that objective personally, I am nevertheless very encouraged to see other members coming forward here and sharing interesting ideas with each other.

Recently however I was compelled to post this journal as a result of observing an alarming trend that I noticed in our community, especially amongst the younger generation. Even in this day and age of fluid and publicly available information, I have continued to meet young professionals whose hearts and minds remain dominated by the field of medical profession, even if sometimes forced by their elders.

Based on a more insightful discussion, it has emerged that the number one reason, and exceptions of course always exist, remains the ill-perceived notion that the medical profession yields the highest returns in terms of dollar value, i.e. best salaries. While I personally would never recommend anyone to pursue a career purely based on its cash value, if someone still prefers to do that, this notion is certainly not accurate.

Firstly, I think one should really pursue what one likes to do most. Never let anyone make you believe anything else. Life is already hard and does not get any easier as one gets older, so why complicate things by trying to study something that one finds difficult? Certainly defies all logic right? Working and studying should not be torture, and if it feels that way, it is certainly not the right area of choice.

Secondly, if you still feel you want to pursue a career mainly for how well it pays, then let me confirm that the medical profession is certainly not the top paying field in North America. In my opinion, it is actually quite an average one. With the exception of becoming a sports star, a celebrity, an entrepreneur such as Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, etc., the highest paying profession remains the area of Finance, and I can prove that with evidence (see links below).

Finally, please note that the purpose of this journal is not to undermine medical professionals. Members of this profession remain highly honorable, competitive and sought after. They play an integral part of the society and their research abilities have lead to significant innovations serving the mankind.

The purpose of this journal is merely to highlight a fact that is often misunderstood in our community. I hope this information will help those who are being pressured into the field of medicine by their elders who have inaccurately promoted the idea that it is most well paid. I also understand that this is not done intentionally, but simply because over the past few decades most of our elders have not progressed with information relating to other professions.
