Berri: Problem is very tough, time is running low
Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri said he does not give heed to anything right now as he does to his "Baalbek initiative". He added that he insists on his approach. Speaking to Assafir daily, Berri said that the coming days will see steps taken within the framework of the initiative similar to the one he took with the Vatican Ambassador to Lebanon. The Speaker warned that the problem is tough and the half-plus-one formula, sought by the February 14 bloc to elect a president, is extremely dangerous. He added that this formula will not only take Lebanon to chaos, but it will wipe out the country and "this is why it should not pass," Berri said.
In his initiative, the Speaker suggested that to solve the months long political crisis in Lebanon, a consensus president would be elected first and a government of national unity would be later agreed on. He insisted, however, that the president would have to be elected by a two-third quorum in parliament.

Berri told Assafir that he was really seeking to achieve consensus before the 25th of September, adding that however time is running out and things are getting extremely hard.
The February 14 powers responded to Berri's initiative after 14 days. They said in their statement: "Let's not say we want elections (on the basis) of a half-plus-one vote and let them (opposition) not block elections under the pretext of a two-third quorum."
Berri said he did not see a response to his initiative in the February 14 statement. "They did not give a response. Their statement is a rosy envelope with a death notice to the Lebanese people," Berri said. "I will not change one word in my initiative and those who wish to help me, my hands are extended to them."
