Benefits of Ramadan
In the month of Ramadan it is very important that we spend a few moments to understand some of the wisdoms and lessons that we can learn from this month of Fasting.
Fasting in the month of Ramadan is the Ultimate Worship.
LESSON 1: Gaining Taqwa (Piety and being conscious of Allah)
Allah (swt) legislated fasting for gaining taqwa, "O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain taqwa." Al Baqarah (2):183
LESSON 2: Drawing closer to Allah
This is achieved by reciting and reflecting on Al-Qur?an during night and day, attending the Taraweeh prayers, remembering Allah and sitting in circles of knowledge. Also for those who can, making I`tikaaf (seclusion) in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
LESSON 3: Acquiring patience and strong will
Allah has mentioned patience more than seventy times in the Qur?an and has commanded patience in more than sixteen ways in His Book.
LESSON 4: Striving for Ihsaan (righteousness and sincerity)
Ihsaan means to worship Allah as if one seeks Him and even though one does not see Him, He sees all. "Fasting is for Me", because no one knows whether you are fasting or not except Allah''.
LESSON 5: Refinement of manners especially those related to truthfulness.
LESSON 6: Recognising that one can change for the better
Allaah provides us with many opportunities to repent to Him and seek His forgiveness.
LESSON 7: Being more charitable
As people restrain themselves from the things they desire most, in the hope that they will earn God's pleasure, self-discipline and sacrifice become part of their nature. They learn to give generously for a good cause.
LESSON 8: Sensing the unity of the Muslims
It is a unity of action and purpose, since they all fast in order to be better human beings. Fasting has another special aspect. It makes all people share the feelings of hunger and thirst.
LESSON 9: Learning discipline
One cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as this will not be accepted by Allah. Muslims should learn to be disciplined in their lives, because they are people of an important message, which they mold their lives around.
Lesson 10: Teaching the young to worship Allah
The young should be brought to the masjid and they should pray with their parents so that they are able to get into the habit of becoming worshippers of Allah (swt).
LESSON 11: Caring for one?s health
Fasting has many medical benefits and it teaches Muslims to take care of their health and to build strong bodies: "A strong believer is better and is more beloved to Allah than a weak believer and there is good in everyone." (Muslim)
May Allah bestows his blessings upon all of us. Ameen.
Salaam to all

Comments on this journal
First of all we you should acknowledge the blessing that Allah has allowed our body and souls to witness Ramadan.
*My first advice is to ask Allah (sat) to guide you by asking for patience, strength, iman, and determination. Not to mention the ability to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, physical contact, vulgar language, backbiting, slandering, gossiping, etc. What I am trying to say is that you should try to abstain from all evils that our hands, eyes, ears, mouths, and mind may utilize.
*Secondly, you should remember that we use fasting as a shield or gaurd from haram and bid'ah. Allah locks up shaitan, opens the gates of heaven, closes the gates of hell, and your rewards are multiplied.
*Thirdly, take the time to use less phone time, less internet time (yes I mean twitter, facebook, myspace, chatting, etc), watch less TV, listen to less music and any other leisurely passions you might use.
*Fourtly, spend your time not only praying the 5 compulsory prayers, but pray some naf'l prayers for your reward will be multiplied and Allah completes a lot of your du'aas (supplications). In addition, read the holy Qu'ran and read the translation so you may be guided by the words of Allah (sat) and obtain knowledge. This way your soul is purified. Take time to go to the masjid to be with the muslim brothers and sisters because the masjid is the house of Allah. Also listen to some lectures and read some hadith.
If you follow this advice, I assure you that you will feel successful and obtain peace which is the meaning of the word Islam. This may help curve and kick bad habits, addictions, and tendencies.
Allah (sat) will also help you in times of affliction and troubles. Again, like i said he multiplies your rewards for the Here After. This should be motivation for you to use your fear and love of Allah as fuel to work hard in this holy month to become closer with your Lord.
I wish you all the best and that Allah may guide us all.
