Assad hopes Lebanon President believes in mutual ties
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has stressed the full agreement of the Syrian-Turkish views on the regional issues and files especially Iraq, Lebanon and the peace process that aims at achieving a just and comprehensive peace on all tracks.
Speaking to reporters in Ankara, Al-Assad said that some countries have asked Damascus to interfere in the current Lebanese crisis ?outside the Lebanese consensus?, stressing that his country only hopes the elected president would believe in the relations with Damascus.
Iraq
Al-Assad clarified that the talks with Turkish officials focused on the Iraqi issue and views agreed on the need to preserve the unity of Iraq and to face any attempts to divide it. "Our vision in Syria is that the Iraqi people are also against the division. Such issues will be discussed in the upcoming conference of Iraq's neighboring countries scheduled to be held in Istanbul soon,"

On Arab-Arab relations, the Syrian President affirmed Syria's continuous endeavor to thaw out these ties particularly that Damascus will host the upcoming Arab summit in March 2008.
Regarding Syrian-Turkish ties and aspects of economic cooperation between the two countries, Al-Assad asserted that there is Turkish consensus on the distinguished relation with Syria, saying that the two countries are working on doubling trade exchange which has reached $1 billion in addition to the agreement on a number of joint projects in the fields of energy, water, developing banks and increasing investment's volume.
On the Syrian position towards the international meeting on peace scheduled to be held next Autumn, President al-Assad said: "Syria explained her position to Turkey and the other friendly nations that have understood the Syrian vision to this subject."
He doubted preparations for this conference are being made, answering by facts that there are no preparations and that the raised issue is the Palestinian cause, noting that there is no Palestinian consensus on this subject.
Al-Assad said that no invitation had been made to Syria on the one hand and Golan is not on the agenda on the other. ?There must be a differentiation between peace and a platform for talks.? He added that the peace process has requirements which are not available now and Syria can not abandon its right in restoring the whole occupied Golan.
