Pactarya, they didn't only think that South Asians needed westernization. Where ever there were Western colonies their approach was to introduce "wester culture". Read about the scramble for Africa and the horrific treatment of African people during the times of Imperialism.

Do read "Motorcycle Diaries". An amazing memoir of Che Guevara's discovery of Latin America. He was definitely a cool Marxist.

Shazia don't you feel that Dalrymple is rather partial in his
history ? That he has an agenda ? He acts as the carrot
of the 'good muslim' to the stick of others such as bernard
levi

I personally feel uncomfortable reading books about Islamic history written by western authors as apart from rare exceptions they are either pushing an establishment agenda or their own ignorance.

For a hundred years western authors pushed the idea that south asians needed to be led by westerners..doesn't that make you think that the whole idea of western historians neutrality is rather spurious ?

Birds without wings by Louis Debernier - about the fall of the Ottoman Empire. One of the best books i've ever read.

I'd also recommend most of the books of William Dalrymple - the history of Delhi, Marco Polo's journey - nonfiction but very accessible and easily written.

Try "My name is Red' by Orhan Pamuk, set in 15th Century Istanbul in the 'first clash of civilizations' or, my all time favourite Leo the African by Amin Malouf which starts off in 14th century Granada before the fall of Andalucia to the Christian armies and then follows a Muslim family as they move to Africa and settle in what is now Morroco....a dazzling description of extraordinary times.
