O boy.. this is just ONE of the mis-quotes attributed to him.. There was one by CNN last summer when he said (in persian) "we are developing nuclear technology" (in ref to peaceful purposes)... and CNN translated it to "Nuclear weapons"..

then when he was interviewed by Michael Wallace of CBS (NY).. he was again mis-quoted when he said "we have 5000 soldiers ready to defend any invasion (or US or Israel)"... he was mis-quoted as "have 5000 martyrs (as in suicide bombers) against Israel"

It's not a mis-quote... it's delibrate propaganda...

We are told Ahmadinejad is the next "Hitler"

Dispite the fact that ...

- Iran is home to the oldest Jewish community in the world.

- Iran has a Jewish community of 25,000 - which is the largest such group in the Middle East outside Israel.

- Iran?s Jews are also an officially recognized religious minority under Iran's 1979 Islamic Constitution.

- The capital of Tehran (the city that Ahmadinejad was Mayor of before becoming president) has 22 active synagogues.

- Jewish burial and divorce laws are accepted by Islamic courts in Iran and Jews are conscripted into the Army.

- Jews have a representative in the nation?s parliament.

Keep in mind as well that Ahmadinejad also claimed in the speech that the issue with Palestine would be over "the day that all refugees return to their homes and a democratic government elected by the people comes to power." Notice he is not implying the genocide of Jews in Israel, but calling for democratic elections and the right of refugee return (Basic human rights as defined by the United Nations).

However, the mistranslated "wiped off the map" quote attributed to Iran's President has been spread worldwide, repeated thousands of times in international media, and prompted the denouncements of numerous world leaders.

Virtually every major and minor media outlet has published or broadcast this false statement to the masses. Big news agencies such as The Associated Press and Reuters refer to the misquote, literally, on an almost daily basis.

Also ... in the full speech ... he then proceeds to list three such regimes that have collapsed, crumbled or vanished, all within the last 30 years:

(1) The Shah of Iran- the U.S. installed monarch

(2) The Soviet Union

(3) Iran's former arch-enemy, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein

In the first and third examples, Ahmadinejad prefaces their mention with Ayatollah Khomeini's own words foretelling that individual regime's demise. He concludes by referring to Khomeini's unfulfilled wish: "The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time. This statement is very wise".

This is the passage that has been isolated, twisted and distorted so famously. By measure of comparison, Ahmadinejad would seem to be calling for regime change in Israel. (And the U.S. who has overthrown more than a dozen regimes in the 20th century, should be familiar with this sentiment.)

So what did Ahmadinejad actually say?

To quote his exact words in farsi:

"Imam ghoft een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad."

Word by word translation:

"Imam (Khomeini) ghoft (said) een (this) rezhim-e (regime) ishghalgar-e (occupying) qods (Jerusalem) bayad (must) az safheh-ye ruzgar (from page of time) mahv shavad (vanish from)."

Notice .... Ahmadinejad did not refer to Israel the country or Israel the land mass, but the Israeli regime.

- It is also important to understand the context within which this statement was made ....

- First ..(According to the 1967 internationally recognized borders - East Jerusalem belongs to the Palestinians and is currently being illegally occupied by Israel, = as is the West Bank). And NO country has recognized Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 478 rejected it as a violation of international law !
