A possible solution
A beta model called SaveLivesTogether (beta name) is in it's initial phases. Without going into much details, this system will create a real time website which will have the following features:
a) Detailed information about the cause ahead of time, with goals, amount of money needed etc.
b) Real time statistics during the operations such as updates and statistical reports , showing how much of the person's money was spent where. Let's say a person donated $10, the report should show $5 spent on food, $2 on medicine, $3 on operational costs etc. This shouldn't be very hard to implement, as one individual's money would be a percentage of the total pool of funds.
c) Live streaming of audio/video from the devastated area.
d) Emergency alerts (i.e. "As reported, AIDS is an issue here, but Malaria is also an issue that we weren't prepared for, we need $x amount of funds immediately to get some vaccine."). People will also be able to see how much of that $x amount is already collected, all real time of course.
This kind of a system will not just get the NAYSAYERS to donate once, but donate over and over again because they will become a part of the system. It'll be the next best thing to actually being there..
