A day with Ghalib & Iqbal
By: Sameer Tariq
Some journeys are unforgettable. Last year while traveling from Islamabad towards Northern areas in Daewoo Bus Service I found myself sitting next to Mirza Ghalib, looking old yet jovial, and with him Allama Iqbal, his head resting on his hand, and eyes closed most of the times..........The conversation between the two shayars was fascinating. I kept quiet throughout the journey and tried to over-hear their conversation......This is what they talked about........
(IQBAL):................"look at those beautiful mountains and lush green valley...if u remember I said once "NAHIN TERA NASHEMAN QASR-E-SULTANI KAY GUMBAD PER....TU SHAHEEN HAI BASERA KAR PAHARON HI CHATANON PER...but very few people seem to remember that. ....aah!!.............
(GHALIB)............" right, Muslims have a short memory Iqbal sahib....especially when it comes to what their "buzurg" shayars said....Last week, while I was in Lahore for 3 days, I felt .....RAHIYE AB AISI JAGAH CHAL KAR, JAHAN KOI NA HO...HUM SUKHAN KOI NA HO, AUR HUM ZUBAAN KOI NAA HO.....the city was over-crowded yet no one seemed to care about the next person...people were just too busy in their own self-created worlds....I was surprised to see their selfish ways.
(IQBAL).........." You are right, its not just Lahore, look at any city today...people have become more and more materialistic and selfish , and they have forgotten the reason this country was made......I wish they could understand the dream I had for this land.....MAHROOM-E-TAMASHA KO PHIR DEEDA-E-BEENA DE...DEKHA HAI JO KUCH MAINE, AURON KO BHI DIKHLA DE.....God!!......Instead of feeling the pain of our mother-land, young generation is too busy with their own silly love stories and "pain" attached with such senseless affairs.
(GHALIB)......." I beg to differ Iqbal sahib.....I think youth is frustrated because of lack of opportunities and corruption. You see when they know there is no future for them even after passing exams in first division, because there are no employment opportunities, what else will happen?? GHAM GAR-CHE JAAN-GSAL HAI, PAR KAHAN TAK BACHEIN KAY DIL HAI....GHAM-E-ISHQ GAR NA HOTA, GHAM-E-ROZGAAR HOTA.......I think 2 generations before this one has failed miserably in establishing proper corruption-free systems in the country....thats the reaon for today's condition.
(IQBAL)....." Hmmm, you are probably correct Ghalib sahib, I don't understand where we went wrong? When we started, we were on the right track...then I don't know what happened...."USS MAUJ KAY MAATAM MEIN, ROTI HAI BHANWAR KI AANKH...DARYA SAY UTHI, PER SAAHIL SAY NA TAKRAYEE"....Im sure you would know how jubilant and happy we were when we succeeded in getting our separate land...we had forgotten all our sorrows, sacrifices, personal grief, because we had the most important thing...most precious....our Pakistan.....
(GHALIB)...."Not just Pakistan Iqbal Sahib, look at India too...No difference there.....They all forgot everything....I think we got too jubilant, too happy and too complacent. This sense of elation perhaps affected the whole nation like sweet, slow poison.....and now we complain about our countries and believe its better to leave them and live somewhere in the US, UK and Canada to earn a decent living and better life....aah!! "HAI AB ISS MAAMOORAY MEIN QAHET-E-GHAM-E-ULFAT ASAD...HUM NAY MAANA KAY DILLI MEIN RAHEIN, PER KHAWEINGAY KYA???"....Which reminds me, you had filed your immigration papers for Canada...what happened???
(IQBAL)....." Got a call from the authorities there...my papers are accepted.. soon I'll be off to Canada for good...They have decided to open a research university only on my philosophy and shayari....Guess that was the only way to keep myself sane and express my ideology...I know the Western nations will listen to what I have to say with more open minds...I can not change my opinion just to please Mullahs here..Im sorry....."BADA KAREEM HAI IQBAL-E-BE-NAWA LEKIN........ATAA-E-SHOLA, SHARARR KAY SIWA KUCH AUR NAHIN.."......what have you decided Ghalib sahib, guess extremists are not too pleased with you as well?
(GHALIB),,,,," No plans really Iqbal Sahib, all the friends like Meer, Momin, Haali, Sauda, even that young lad Faiz have left the country for Europe and America.....I think I will also decide within next few days.....Got invitations from almost all the countries of the West......"RAW MEIN HAI RAKHSH-E-UMER, KAHAN DEKHIYE THAMAY......NAY HAATH BAAG PE HAIN, NA PAA HAI RAKAAB MEIN..." Wherever He takes me....
(IQBAL)...." Hmmm......guess I will miss this land, no matter what.....But the situation in the last few decades has become such that I have not been able to sleep at nights for a long time.........."ISSI KASHMAKASH MEIN GUZRI, MERI ZINDAGI KI RAATEIN, KABHI SOZ-O-SAAZ-E-ROOMI, KABHI PECH-O-TAAB-E-RAAZI".......I hope I will be able to sleep there...atleast until I have nothing left in my heart or mind to say or express.........I just hope......."
(GHALIB)...." Yeah same here....I don't know how I'll live away from my country, but as you said, its important to express and say whatever is left in our hearts.........And if that also doesn't work out, then I guess I'll call it a day....I seriously feel sometimes, that it was all a waste.....all useless......"NA THA KUCH TO, KHUDA THA, KUCH NA HOTA TO KHUDA HOTA....DUBOYA MUJH KO HONAY NAY, NA HOTA MAIN TO KYA HOTA??.."......Nothing.....except Allah
I had heard enough, and I had no more courage to hear anymore, so I changed my seat, and started reading newspaper, trying to forget the pain and sorrow in the voices of the greatest poets of all time...GHALIB AND IQBAL...........And I was trying to free myself from this guilty feeling that was seeping in my heart, my mind and my soul like poison....slow poison.....
