A Common Understanding that is not understood
Nicolas Hanhan
Why should an Islamic terrorist Militia sign in a church on democracy and strategic defense plan?
Recently in an interview with France Press, Future Movement leader Sheikh Saad Al-Hariri said that he can not understand how a political leader as Prime Minister Michel Aoun can be simultaneously with the international justice and security counsel resolutions and in Alliance with a Hezbollah which is a terrorist group.
Mr. Hariri continues to defend his past alliance with Hezbollah during the 2005 elections by saying that Hezbollah gave him nothing in return and today is asking for Hariri, Jumblat and Aoun umbrella, Aoun is not acceptable because of his association with Hezbollah!

Why should an Islamic terrorist Militia sign in a church on democracy and strategic defense plan? The answer is clear; this group is a part of the Lebanese society; it is rooted socially and economically, as Lebanese we have two choices, either fight or understand. The two leaders chose the second option and try to bridge this option to various Lebanese parties.
Furthermore we read in the understanding a request to put in place an integrated security plan based on the centralization of security decisions and on a clear definition of enemy versus friend, the determination of security threats, including the issue of terrorism as well as the security breaches that must be dealt with.
One comment that could be made for Nassrallah and Aoun that their understanding came seventeen years late but in time to try saving the democracy and bridge dialogue between the Lebanese.
What we did not understand from the understanding is an Islamic republic for Hezbollah; we can not understand the mention of liberation of Palestine or the request for Syrian troops to come back to Lebanon.
In surprise the common understanding does not mention an Islamic republic or liberation of Palestine, this time we can understand a symbolic sign in church and an understanding that has only Lebanon as boundaries.
What did the understanding between Aoun and Hezbollah include? Did Hezbollah furnish anything to Lebanon through his signature? Did Aoun gain politically by signing a common understanding with a party classified by the United States as a terrorist group?
Before reading the understanding a supporter to Aoun commented "Buddies and Syrian followers are leaving Damascus while the General is going up! After reading the common understanding we can identify on the ground the positive factors it had to the Lebanese political life especially during July 06 war were Israel was unsuccessful in targeting Hezbollah targeted Lebanon people and economy!
The understanding that affirmed for a diplomatic relations with Syria asked for consensual democracy and linked the dilemma of Hezbollah weapons to the liberation of Shebaa farms, the return of prisoners and a strategic defense plan; all can be achieved by a strong state in Lebanon.
Nassrallah - Aoun understanding has been under attack since the minute the two men left Saint Michael church. In the same night future TV broadcasted statements for the two leaders that contradict the understanding, Aoun and all his parliamentary members are charged to be Syrian and Iranian puppets.
