:) About Algeria: Recently the country has seen the first Berber translation of the Qu'ran.
Algiers: Algeria has translated the Quran into the Berber language, Tamazight, for the first time, to promote Islam among a community that has long campaigned for more language and cultural rights, an official has said.
The translation was done at the request of officials from local mosques in Kabylie districts such as Tizi Ouzou where congregations did not understand Arabic.
"The translation is fruitful" . "Mosques in Tizi Ouzou were empty before the distribution of the copies. It is now very difficult to find a place there, particularly on Friday."
Across the Arab world, traditional media are under siege as people find new ways of getting their information - with the internet leading the revolution.

I read an article on Algeria planning on spending millions to make sure they increase their literacy rate.
one of my moms aunts (cute old lady) didnt noe how to read, and so at the city she lives in (constantine, algeria), they made a special class for older women to teach them how to read and write arabic. her only goal was to be able to read the quran, mashallah but she came out of the class with so much more.
I agree literacy should not just be the ability to read and write. May be having some type of elementary education is a better measure.
But how many sides does a triangle have? Hello; you learn this even before you learn reading and writing...
So I think general knowledge should be included in literacy... It would make it harder to measure though.
But I still cannot get over the zero sides for a triangle :(
At least the figures are the same for Algeria 70%

Palestinian Autonomous Territories is 92%. Algeria is 70 and Egypt is 71% (not 58%). it does not show Libya and Lebanon.
I am not sure how each gather their statistics, but I would go with the UN figures

These are figures from the CIA, so I dont know how biased they can be...
I am hoping some day they can have Palestine on their list of countries :(
