There is a Hyderabadi/Hydro Social/Business Network Lunch on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 2 pm at Handi Restaurant, 631 Lexington Avenue & 28th Street, New York, NY (212-685-2000).
While it is wonderful to have so many Hyderabadis/Hydros in this area, it would be nice to get together for a networking lunch. Depending on the response and interest future events may include speakers and activists interested in Hyderabadi issues.

Assalamualakum
I hope this note finds everyone in the best of health and spirits.
Let me preface this by stating that I am usually not very politically motivated. I have normally been disenfranchised by politics, Washington, and politicians. But lets face it folks, we are grown ups now, and our livelihood both as Adults beginning our families, and as Muslims is on the line. The time to act is NOW!!
For the first time in my life, I am working on a campaign, because I believe in Obama, his message, his ability to unite people and most importantly his authenticity over any other candidate. After 8 years of Bush, we are all yearning for change.. I have spent the morning and afternoon canvassing for the Barack Obama campaign to encourage undecided voters to get out the vote.
My reasons for supporting Obama go beyond his poetry, prose and finesse. He is a breath of fresh air and doesn??t bring all that Clinton baggage with him to the elections. For anyone following the platforms of the two candidates, it is fair to say policy wise, there is not much difference between them. However, if Clinton is the nominee, Is anyone really looking forward to an election of being reminded of all of Bill's infidelities, and his ugly moment of wagging his fingers at us?. We will get to see the Monica Lewinsky embrace over and over again. And names like Linda Tripp and Ken Star, Whitewater and Travelgate, Jennifer Flowers, Mark Rich and Paula Jones, Vince Foster and the infamous blue dress will once again enter the realm. We'll get to hear more about questionable fundraising?X(there seems to be PLENTY of it). We have already been subjected to Clinton tactics of by any means necessary invoking Jesse Jackson references in South Carolina, Tony Rezko being arrested the day Obama gets endorsed by Ted Kennedy, etc etc. I know I'm missing a whole bunch of fun and intriguing facts, but don't fret, our Republicans friends will hash it all out for us, over and over again. Making Hillary Clinton the nominee will be the best thing for the Republican Party. If anything gets them riled up, it??s the Clinton Machine. You even have righter than right Ann Coultier saying she would back Clinton. Trust me, I knocked on so many doors yesterday and the Republicans have nothing but venom for Hilary. It will bring them out in groves for her.
Clinton has taken so much financial support from Lobbyists, politician families, and special interest groups that of course there are backroom deals etc. Barack Obama raised 38 million dollars in January ALONE. That??s grassroots support of $25-50 from ordinary people. I think it speaks volumes. (This is not to say I am naive in thinking Obama's hands are clean)
Which brings me to another point, The nominee is not likely to be determined on Super Tuesday. And guess what? For those of us who live in Jersey and are supporting Obama, it is an upward climb. The party bosses in most of the NJ Counties have pledged their support to the Clinton Machine in such backroom deals. In the end, I think it will come down to a super delegate count that may have nothing to do with the primary voting. Party bosses can give their delegates to whomever, despite who their districts voted for. You know why they can speak for me?? Because not enough of us have been outraged and spoken out against them. We are apathetic both as individuals and a Muslim constituency and hence the party bosses, the elected officials can get away with it. We haven??t held them accountable.
We as Muslims have a moral obligation to vote. We must have Muslims speaking out, showing up in large numbers and being involved in the political process. This will enable our vote to be sought-after by political nominees. We need to stop complaining about not being taken seriously, while we fail to exercise our right to vote. Its time for Muslims to be seriously considered a vital constituency by candidates of all political parties. This will make them to address issues of concern for our community. American Muslims are increasing in numbers; hence, we stand to make an increasingly significant difference in the outcome of elections if we get involved. For this election, we need people to write editorials to the Record, to their local papers, and get their family members to vote. Quite a number of my fellow Teaneck residents aren??t even registered, Let me know. I will drop voter registration forms at your house.
Between the environment, the energy crisis, the war, the fear mongering invoked by Islamophobes, our future generations are inheriting a dismal world. Majority of us are first generation American Muslims, who need to set a precedent for them. We need to stop sitting in the back seat, and get involved with whomever you are supporting. Even if its Billary! ?? That being said, if her name is on the ballot in November, I will support her, begrudgingly, but will support her nonetheless.
I hope I have not offended anyone, and may Allah forgive me if I have said anything wrong.

has added a new journalSo there I was this past Friday evening, at the home of a formally-trained, Hindu tabla player, who will insh'allah perform at the single professionals' matrimonial event that I am hosting on Sat., March 29, 2008.
I had found him online as, after contacting several tabla players in and around the area, he seemed to be most authentic and one who was formally trained by a classical tabla artist back in Bengal.
I and one of my sisters went to their home to which he and his wife welcomed us very warmly. Then he brought out all of his tablas, handling each intricate piece like fine porcelain, and set up a microphone all in a very professional manner. We were the audience and he the performer.
He played for about 20 minutes non-stop, so lost in the world of rhythm and "saaz"/melody that it seemed like he was in a whole another dimension. He is very skilled indeed and played beautifully!
Now came my next dilemma...
To recruit a dance artist who will give us 1 or 2 dance performances on Mughal-style music/songs!
I had to look no further. The young tabla player's young wife, after seeing my eyes light up-- as I spoke of the event, the setting, the Mughal era (my obsession with it!) and my intent to bring unmarried Muslim professionals together with this theme in mind-- volunteered to practice a dance or two at the event, with her husband's choreography directon (as he choreographs as well).
I struck two birds with one stone Friday evening and I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the kindness of others, kindness that knows no bounds of religion nor ethnicity.
This event is going to rock (on all fronts)!
