has added a new journalHere is a photo of the two calibers supported by my current and pending AR15 build. The smaller bullet is a Govt Issue 5.56x45 (NATO version of the .223) frangible round. It will send its 50 grain projectile, made from pressed tin and copper powder with a copper jacket, at 3000 fps from a 16" barrel. It's energy at the muzzle is around 1200 ft-lbs, but that rapidly falls downrange.
The other bullet is a 458 SOCOM. It is a "wildcat", or custom cartridge developed recently by Marty ter Weeme from Teppo Jutsu in Texas. This particular cartridge has a 405 grain (that's 8x the weight) projectile that reaches a maximum speed of 1300fps, producing a whopping 2300 ft-lbs of energy. It is capable of cracking engine blocks at over 50 yards. The 458 SOCOM specification covers projectiles from 250 to 600 grains, including broze and copper solid bullets, hollow points, soft points, and hard-cast lead (though lead is not appropriate for an AR15 as it fouls the gas system).
The 458 SOCOM cartridge single-stacks in unmodified AR15 magazines, allowing 10 rounds in a 30 round 5.56 magazine. The lower, fire control, stock, mags, and even upper, optics, bolt carrier and tube need not be modified. All that the operator needs is a custom barrel and bolt.
The cartridge burns all of its powder within 7" of barrel, so it is ideal for use as an SBR, if local laws permit and one puts in the Title 2 paperwork and pays the tax stamp.
My upper, which is still in the shop, has a 14.5" barrel with a permanently attached vortex flash hider, making the barrel over 16" long and thus legal w/o any NFA paperwork.
