Things you should know about pms?

?When a woman has PMS, it?s like she?s in an altered state,? reports Dr. Susan Thys-Jacobs, Endocrinologist.

For approximately 40 million U.S. women, PMS is regular influence on their physical and psychological well-being. Recent studies have found that over 70 percent of relationships are affected to some extent by PMS. So PMS impacts nearly everyone, including men!

Here are a few simple steps you can take either as a sufferer ? or as a supportive friend ? to help:

Take it easy on your roommate (or your friend?s roommate). When a group of women work or live together, their menstrual cycles begin to coincide, and so do their PMS symptoms. ?Synchronous menstruation,? as this phenomenon is known, was first described in 1971 by researcher Martha McClintock, now with the University of Chicago. Synchronous menstruation has been observed among mothers, sisters, and daughters who live together, and sometimes among women who simply work together.

Watch what you eat/drink. Certain foods and drugs can trigger the effects of PMS like sugar, caffeine, alcohol, salt, and smoking.

Stock up the fridge. Many women turn to over-the-counter pain remedies alone to ease the symptoms of PMS. But, a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that diets rich in high calcium foods, like MILK, cut the physical and emotional symptoms of PMS in half.

Drink your MILK! Another study conducted by the US Department of Agriculture?s Human Nutrition Research Center, found that women on the high calcium diet were less irritable, weepy, and depressed. Plus they avoided backaches, cramping and bloating.

Increase your protein. Carbohydrate dense diets have been linked to an increase in PMS symptoms. High protein and calcium-rich foods, however, have been shown to help alleviate them. With 9 grams of protein ? and 300 mgs of calcium ? an 8-ounce glass of nonfat MILK turns out to be the ideal PMS food.

Spinach anyone? You?d have to eat 15? cups of spinach to get the same amount of calcium found in one, 8-ounce glass of MILK.

Exercise too! A well balanced diet full of calcium-rich, low fat foods, like nonfat milk and yogurt ? coupled with daily exercise ? has been shown to significantly reduce the symptoms of PMS. Physical activity rids the body of excess water, improves circulation, and helps reduce stress.

Lactose Intolerant? For those who?ve been diagnosed with lactose intolerance, lactose-free MILK are available in supermarkets. Lactose-free milks have all the same nutrients as regular MILK.

GLASS OF MILK

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

He said ... "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

As he left that house, he not o nly felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit..

Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors wer e baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

A doctor was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won.

The doctor requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all.

Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words .. "Paid in full with one glass of milk" Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank You God, that Your love has spread broad through human hearts and hands."

There's a saying which goes something like this: Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at t he least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place -

And, after all, isn't that what life is all about?!
