The olive harvest in Palestine takes place during the last 10 days of October.

Agricultural production is of considerable importance in the Palestinian agricultural economy and all the energies are mobilized during this period. For the past four years, the olive harvest was shadowed by the Israeli policies of repression, closure, blockage of streets, confiscation of agricultural lands, repeated attacks against the Palestinian Farmers by the Israeli army and settlers, and also by the construction of the Apartheid Wall.

Palestine is a country of Olives and the olive tree is an ancient source of basic livelihood and nutrition. It is also a great symbol for the Palestinians.

About 13 million olive trees grow in Palestine on more than 70% of the agricultural lands. The olive tree has also an important value in the local cultural life; with olive oil, soap is manufactured in Nablus and with its wood, famous handicrafts are made in the Bethlehem area.

All of this makes the olive tree the main vein of the Palestinian life and culture.

1. Palestinian Poetry - Oh my father, I am Yusuf
By: Hanifa
sung by Marcel Khalife
(The last verse is the one that was particularly objected to.)Translated by Amal Amireh

Oh my father, I am Yusuf
Oh father, my brothers neither love me nor want me in their midst
They assault me and cast stones and words at me
They want me to die so they can eulogize me
They closed the door of your house and left me outside
They expelled me from the field
Oh my father, they poisoned my grapes
They destroyed my toys
When the gentle wind played with my hair, they were jealous
They flamed up with rage against me and you
What did I deprive them of, Oh my father?
The butterflies stopped on my shoulder
The bird hovered over my hand
What have I done, Oh my father?
Why me?
You named me Yusuf and they threw me into the well
They accused the wolf
The wolf is more merciful than my brothers
Oh, my father
Did I wrong anyone when I said that
I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon
Saw them kneeling before me ?

A Rose and an Iris
for my believing Mother's patience
for my brothers homeless for twenty years
for every village in my Home Country
for every destroyed house
for every fortified Citadel
for every Poet under siege
for every colored Rock
for every heart beating with Love for all the places
for every heart hating the treacherous dogs
a Rose...
and a thousand Irises !

Tell me what you guys think of this. I wrote it :)...honest opinions please. Shukran

I couldn't ignore the killing any longer
The occupation was too much
When will we see Palestine free
Or given peace, justice and such?

I've been to the edge with the visions of death
And become happy with thoughts of justice and no pain
Feeling the killing of my people
And millions of lives are lost,
With nothing left to gain

The sun failed to shine
In Palestine, my sacred ground
Birds no longer sing
All I hear is a dying kid's sound

All the countries as a whole
Had turned and went their way
They never returned to us
Or asked to take our pain away

Consumption by hate, to save was too late
Where should we turn now?
Why do our kids get killed?
Or our women put down?
When could Palestine be free?
Or even better, tell me how?

I'd rather die a shaheed
Than to be treated like dirt
Bittersweet battle within
Too numb to pain, how could I feel the hurt?

Smiles soon faded
And hearts followed to break
As we cried out for help
Would you help for Allah's sake?

Routinely everyday we cry
For a hand to reach to us
Our minds were full of emptiness
And from far we closed our eyes

But we feel we should fight
To save ourselves from the occupation
Piercing our lips are words of insignificance
And the end to our frustration

As time's hands move on and on
Together, as one, we'll grow
Tired of being tired in time
No feelings of mercy will you show

In time as your thoughts are even
Will we be thought of as your pawn?
And will you be happy or sad
When more people are dying and gone?

You ask why are we sad?
Have you seen our occupied dear land?
Have you been there to see
What kinda life they had?

You come and judge us and blame
Who the hell are you to speak?
Look at all the dying victims
Blood of your bullets they leak

Before you come and debate
Open our hearts, books and pages
You'll see our hidden truth
Our frustration and rages

You come and ask for peace
What have you done to resolve
The issue of our dying innocents
Pure as angels, sweet as a dove

Akkhhhhh God please help us
To You, our pains we turn
Please have mercy in their hearts
Make them wake up and learn

I say this...and I finalize
The madness inside my mind
Hoping they'd realize
The dying families and kids,
And not be so damn blind
