Looking for Biotech ideas - we have our company based in Manchester Uk.Login to find out
has added a new journalIn light of the economic meltdown, what is your take on new scientific discoveries and the ability to market them? Especially in the biotech field. Do you feel that the market is resilient to technical innovation at this point in time? Would it be a wise decision to push forward cardiac or orthopedic medical devices? How does this move fare for the smaller, medium and larger biotechs? This brings me to my next question, what biotech field is making strides in an uptight economy?

has added a new journalI have seen that a lot of biotech startups are heavily staffed with local university faculty, scientists and students. It has been seen as is the case with university research parks at Stanford University, U. Wisconsin and MIT are highly successful in kick starting biotech startups.
I think it is a great synergy between large universities, academic medical centers and small scale biotech to develop cutting edge medical products. Eventually they get bought out by larger biotech companies. However, the underlying theme here is that universities contribute tremendously to the research base of research and development of biotech companies.

Syed,Thanks for the input, it was really insightful. I do like the environment of large research universities and their research parks. I am sure universities like UW-Madison, UIUC are great centers for cutting edge research. So what kind of research do you work on? Alright, take care.

Dhobi,Most research was conducted in their own labs that were custom built for the company. The company also housed some equipment that the University bought for the company and is shared by others at the university. The university park is very clean, sophisticated, hitech, and has well educated employees. Many connections existed between the university and the university research park. You can literally walk right across from Engineering buildings to the research park. However, it is seperate at the same time. Most students don't even know what those buildings over there are for. At the same time, people at the research park can also and often do just walk over to see experts at the university or just get a starbucks coffee at the library. Recruiting employees was also much easier as the company recruited from several departments in the college of arts and sciences and also business.

Thanks for your input, did your company conduct most of their bench/basic research at the university labs? How did you find the working environment at the university park, did you feel that it was more of an academic/university culture? I am thinking recruiting employees must have been easy given the pool of fresh grads.Login to find out
has added a new journalSo what is the right recipe for starting and achieving success in the biotech industry, especially in a weak economy. It would be great to get input from established professionals and entrepreneurs who have ventured down this patch. I am myself interested in cardiac, orthopedic and neural biotechnology. How much experience, management know-how, recruitment, personnel management does a start-up curtail? What are the pit-falls of start-ups? What are the gleaming points of a successful company? Any thought on securing seed funds for kick-starting the project? Do scientific ideas usually translates well in practice? How about networking is it fruitful to have established scientist, and faculty collaboration with prominent universities? How big a role does large university medical centers play in biotech start-ups? Is it wise to hire fresh PhDs or rely on experienced recruits for carrying out the research? How do you sell or approach hospitals, clinics or the market for selling your medical product? What are typical profit-margins for early start-ups? Which technology in biotech is specifically gaining/demanding attention? Hopefully, looking forward to immersing myself in biotech endeavors in the near future.
