has added a new journalThe 2nd City Council Art Gallery + Performance Space is pleased to announce
its call for California artists for "In the Name of All that's Holy". This
exhibition explores beliefs, faith, religion and spirituality. The
exhibition runs November 26, 2005 - January 6, 2006.
Cash awards $500, $300, $ 200, $100 plus the infamous Eye Opener Statue.
The juror is Dr. Allen F. Roberts is Professor of World Arts and Cultures
and French and Francophone Studies at UCLA, as well as director of the James
S. Coleman African Studies Center. He also serves on the advisory boards of
Islamic Studies and the Center for Religious Studies at UCLA. His PhD in
Anthropology was based upon four years of field research on cosmology,
politics, and the arts among Tabwa people of the Congo. The book and
exhibition that resulted were the first of five major NEH-funded projects
created around his work or to which he has been a principal contributor. One
book and exhibition considered animals in African art (1995), another
recycling in Africa (1996). "Memory: Luba Art and the Making of History"
(1996), organized with his spouse, Dr. Mary "Polly" Nooter Roberts (deputy
director and chief curator, UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History), won the
College Art Association's Alfred H. Barr Award for Museum Scholarship. Most
recently, "A Saint in the City: Sufi Arts of Urban Senegal" (2003), also
organized with Polly, won the African Studies Association's Herskovits Prize
as the best book in African Studies of 2003, and the exhibition was hailed
by art critic Holland Cotter of The New York Times as one of the ten best
of 2003 on any topic at any museum in the United States.
Entries can be submitted by slides, photographs or digital prints. The
gallery will also accept submission in the form of a digital file, 800 x 600
pixels at 72 DPI in JPG format. For email submissions only, MULTIPLE
submissions should each be sent separately. Please fill out the entry form
(on website or mailed by request), SASE and send it with the payment to our

Submission Receipt Deadline is Friday October 21, 2005. Entry fee is $ 15
per entry (per slide etc) for members and $ 17 per entry for nonmembers.
