Get bangles named Katrina, Kareena and Aishwarya

Besides the scores of old shops selling zardosi bridalwear and jootis, one of the top draws of the bustling Old City area of Bhopal is the fashionable bangles available here.

What's more interesting are the names by which these bangles are sold — generally, roads and restaurants are named after celebrities, but the Old City market is famous for naming bangle sets after Bollywood actresses.

Bangles named after Kareena Kapoor Khan, Katrina Kaif and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan top the list while the famous TV show Jodha Akbar has also inspired several designs. There is a pair named after Jaya Bachchan too, who is from Bhopal. Says Akeel, a shop owner, "Ladies here demand designer bangles they've seen on television. We order those designs especially for them. There's also a lot of demand for bangle sets named after Bollywood actresses, especially Katrina, Kareena and Aishwarya." Adds Faiz, another shopkeeper, "At our shop, we have beautiful collections of bangles, similar to the ones worn on Jodha Akbar. Ladies ask for those bangles that Jodha wears specifically. These bangles are available in the range of `350- `700."

"Ekta Kapoor ke serial bahut chalte hain. Usme jo actress choodiyan pehanti hai, uski bahut demand hoti hai," explains shopkeeper Sohail, referring to the stylish bangles that actresses wear in her shows. He adds that the first time they noticed a spike in the demand for designer bangles was when historical shows started airing on television.
